Award recognizes leadership in ethical business practices and commitment
to sustainability
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mar. 6, 2013--
Waste Management (NYSE: WM) has been recognized by the Ethisphere
Institute—a leading international organization dedicated to the
creation, advancement and sharing of best practices in business ethics,
governance, anti-corruption and sustainability—as one of the 2013
World’s Most Ethical (WME) Companies. This is the sixth year the company
has been honored for upholding the highest of ethical standards. Waste
Management was chosen for its strong corporate culture focused on deep
commitments to environmental sustainability, ethics and communities and
setting and achieving ambitious sustainability goals.
“This recognition from Ethisphere reflects our most fundamental
commitment to keeping the environment—and our people and our
neighbors—safe,” said David Steiner, chief executive officer and
president of Waste Management. “As an industry leader, we continue to
develop strategies to extract value from waste, which both minimizes our
environmental impact and saves our customers money.”
This is the seventh year Ethisphere has published the WME rankings.
Ethisphere evaluated a record number of applications this year and
reviewed nominations from companies in more than 100 countries and 36
industries. After conducting in-depth research and a multi-step
analysis, Ethisphere named companies that surpassed their industry peers
to this year’s World’s Most Ethical Companies list.
The methodology for the WME ranking includes reviewing codes of ethics,
litigation and regulatory infraction histories; evaluating the
investment in innovation and sustainable business practices; looking at
activities designed to improve corporate citizenship; and studying
nominations from senior executives, industry peers, suppliers and
customers.
“Waste Management continues to be a staple component of our list, for
the sixth year running, and we are pleased to reward its commitment to
ethical business practices,” said Alex Brigham, executive director of
Ethisphere. “Waste Management has accomplished a great deal through its
various sustainability initiatives, and we are excited to see the
company continue to make major progress in achieving its goals.”
